A lineage is a direct line of teaching that the teacher/practitioner has been trained. A teacher’s lineage reflects the information that the teacher will be passing on to the student. Therefore, different lineages will have different techniques, philosophies and understandings of working with the system of Reiki.

Before beginning a course it is important to see if it’s is a legitimate branch of the system of Reiki. If the lineage began with Mikao Usui, then it is genuine and authentic healing energy of Reiki which is being taught. The length of lineage is of no consequence.

Lineages that follow a Western teaching will always have these people at the beginning of the lineage tree:

1. Mikao Usui
2. Dr Chujiro Hayashi
3. Hawayo Takata

Mikao Usui: Founder of Reiki. Please see ‘History of Reiki’ for further information.

Dr Chujiro Hayashi: Formalised the hand positions and method of teaching Reiki to others. Please see ‘History of Reiki’ for further information.

Hawayo Takata: Brought Reiki to the West, via Hawaii. Please see ‘History of Reiki’ for further information.

Beth Gray: The first Reiki Master who was trained in 1973.

Helen Bolger & Paul Grimes: Reiki Masters in Poll-na-Labhor, County Clare, Ireland.

Karen Hemmings: Reiki Master Teacher & Principal of Therapy Training School.

Vasoula Christodoulou: Reiki Master Teacher in London.

If you follow a study course with Vasoula this will be your lineage:

Dr Chujiro Hayashi

Hawayo Takata

Beth Gray

Dr John Veltheim

Helen Bolger & Paul Grimes

Karen Hemmings

Vasoula Christodoulou
